FOX LAKE APPEAL UPDATE
Our Fox Lake appeal (see LYNX 6/04 and 8/04) was denied by the Chief of the Forest Service. Thus next summer the helicopters will roar into the High Uintas Wilderness, the heavy machinery dropped and both Fox Lake and Crescent Lake Reservoirs will be re-constructed and easement offered to the two irrigation companies. We didn't lose the appeal on the merits--the Forest Service simply concluded the Wilderness Act has no merit or action associated with it and it was at best subservient to the whims of a private irrigation company. The real tragedy is that the Forest Service has known this issue was coming for over two decades. With a Cheshire grin, they will tell us that they take no joy in offering the easement and allowing heavy motorized equipment into the wilderness, but there was no alternative.
There is a single-word response for this statement... but onward we must press.
